Propolis Antimicrobial Activity against Periodontopathic Bacteria
نویسندگان
چکیده
Propolis extract antimicrobial activity against periodontopathic (ATCC) bacteria was investigated “in vitro”. Bacterial strains tested were: Prevotella intermedia, Prevotella melaninogenica, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Capnocytophaga gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum. Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) for the strains tested was determined using the method of broth dilution with the propolis extract in serial concentrations. Results showed MIC of 1 μg/ml for Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans and Capnocytophaga gingivalis; and 0.25 μg/ml for Prevotella intermedia, Prevotella melaninogenica, Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum. Some superinfectant organisms were also tested: Candida albicans susceptibility to propolis ethanolic extract was demonstrated at a concentration of 12 μg/ml. The MIC for Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus (wild types) was 14 μg/ml. All periodontal pathogens and superinfectants tested were susceptible to the propolis extract. The positive results suggest that the propolis extract should be further tested as an adjuvant to periodontal therapy.

Basic peptide protamine exerts antimicrobial activity against periodontopathic bacteria——Growth inhibition of periodontopathic bacteria by protamine
Protamine was investigated for its antibacterial activity against the periodontal pathogens, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. We determined the minimum inhibitory concentrations of protamine and its hydrolysate and their bactericidal activity. Protamine inhibited the growth of all periodontopathic bacteria tested on agar plates. Protamin...

The minimal inhibitory concentrations of Rodogyl (composite tablet of metronidazole and spiramycin), metronidazole-spiramycin mixture, spiramycin, metronidazole, and tetracycline were determined for selected putative periodontopathic microorganisms. Rodogyl was active against almost all strains, including Bacteroides species and the anaerobic spirochetes. Synergism of the component drugs in the...

The "in vitro" antibacterial activity of ethanol extract of propolis (EEIP) from Urmia, Iran was investigated against three prevalent species of fish bacterial pathogens including: Aeromonas hydrophila LMG 3770, Yersinia ruckeri LMG 3279 and Streptococcus iniae LMG 14520. In this study two standard susceptibility testing techniques (Micro-broth dilution method and Agar-well diffusion method) we...
